Dong Feng: Chinese Storm from the East

Wang Dong Feng

The correct translation of the chinese name dong feng should be “east storm”. The Chinese are very aware by choosing names. For them, it’s not about how a name sounds, but about the precise symbolism of the expression. The Chinese generally like to use symbolic language. They prefer to convey their concerns or goals by referring to a symbol.

The Chinese kung fu fighter Wang Dong Feng came to Vienna in 1986. Dong Feng is his first name. He himself explained that this name was chosen for him with much intention by the Chinese Wang clan. There are six clans in China that are considered essential to the development of Chinese fighting techniques (wushu, taiji, neijiaquan).

The Wang clan is one of these six. In the West the Wang are not as well known for development of fighting techniques as the five Clans of Chen, Yang, Sun, Wu, and Wu Hao. However, the achievements of the Wang clan are arguably undisputed in China, particularly in the development of the so-called internal fighting techniques. According to his own statement, Wang Dong Feng is the 13th generation of the Wang kungfu clan. In China 13th could be a fact or certainly used as a symbol for his function.

Chinese Special Forces

Speaking of stormy autumn weather, when the trees bend and the leaves fly wildly about, Wang Dong Feng said that "stormy weather he loves the most.” The correct meaning of Dong Feng is therefore “Eastern Storm.” Or more precisely: "A Storm from the East".

According to his own statement, Wang Dong Feng is a close friend of Qing Fu Pan, who was a well-known martial fighter in the People’s Republic of China. Wang Dong Feng reported that he “spent several years with Qing Fu Pan in China, seeing him every day". Research revealed that Qing Fu Pan was an instructor for the Chinese Special Forces.

At the same time that Wang Dong Feng settled in Vienna, Qing Fu Pan began preparing to move to Canada. Subsequently, Qing Fu Pan lived until 2017 in the city of Kitchener, Ontario, which is located near the border with the United States. The U.S. state of New York lies on the other side of the border. Via Niagara Falls and Buffalo, major cities such as Washington, D.C., and New York City are only a day’s drive away.

18 Hours a Day in Town

Wang Dong Feng tried to gain access to numerous organizations in Vienna. To do so, he spent 18 hours a day on the move in the city. One of his first assignments took him to the Rossauer Polizeikaserne (Police Barracks Rossau) in Vienna. This allowed the Chinese from the People’s Republic to quickly infiltrate the Austrian police force, where he hoped to establish valuable contacts. An article on this appeared in the Huffington Post:

Wang Dong Feng also gained access to the UNO in Vienna, to the Army Sports and Combat School, to meetings of Austrian Olympic medalists, and to the University of Performing Arts. He was interested in connections with embassy staff and looked to get a room in Waltergasse Vienna near the Diplomatic Academy. Wang Dong Feng wanted access to major martial fight facilities, as well as to spiritual centers, yoga schools and experimental theatre groups. He wanted to establish a presence in as many institutions in Vienna as possible.

According to a member of the board, significant conflicts also arose at the Vienna Buddhist Center. Wang Dong Feng had also to leave the Shambhala Center. Wang Dong Feng also sought contact with the well-known spiritual author and philosopher Arnold Keyserling. Tensions arose there as well. Wang Dong Feng probably gave the impression that he intended to take over Arnold Keyserling’s renowned yoga school.

Wang Dong Feng also established contact with the musician Oliver Shanti, who was very popular for his spiritual music. Shanti was primarily interested in Indian philosophy. However, Wang Dong Feng persuaded him to produce two albums in a style suited to Chinese traditions. Following his cooperation with Wang Dong Feng, Oliver Shanti suffered a severe breakdown. He was sentenced to several years in prison and contracted an unknown infectious disease while in custody. His once-popular music was removed from store shelves.

Kung Fu Fighter Based in Vienna

Wang Dong Feng personally maintained several addresses in Vienna. A basement in the 9th district, near the Danube Canal, became his refuge. Secured by several steel doors, each with three locks. No indication of a kungfu center. No nameplate at the gate. Inside, there were winding rooms with false walls, possible to create hidden rooms.

As far as it is known, Wang Dong Feng largely withdrew from public life around 2005. Wang Dong Feng was the first kung fu fighter to come to Vienna from the People’s Republic of China who was officially recognized as highly qualified. He held the 10th dan — a rank that, in his tradition, as it was stated in a report of the Wang organization “is no longer, or hardly ever, awarded out, of respect for the deceased masters.”

Since then, around 20 additional Chinese kung fu leaders have settled in the Austrian capital. Although wushu—the Chinese term for the combat techniques of kung fu — can only be considered a niche sport in Austria, practiced by relatively few people.

What is the mission of these highly qualified wushu leaders? For what purpose are so many of them being stationed in Austria? It must be clarified whether security checks were conducted when Chinese kung fu fighters sought to become active in Europe.

Important Geostrategic Location in Europe

Vienna is a geostrategically advantageous location in the heart of Europe. From Vienna, agents can carry out clandestine operations throughout Europe. This also applies to Chinese special forces. Wang Dong Feng explained that he is a Chinese Taoist who spent ten years in the Wudang Mountains being taught secret teachings that are passed down only orally.

But Wang Dong Feng received yet another form of training in the People’s Republic of China: with the Special Forces, in close collaboration with Qing Fu Pan. Only after such instruction he was deployed to Europe. The name Dong Feng has become more popular in the People’s Republic of China since 1986, when the first “Storm from the East” arrived in Vienna, and is meanwhile used more frequently. The Chinese atomic bomb also bears the name “Dong Feng.”
